The Santa Clara University baseball team defeated Loyola Marymount University 10-5 on Mar. 29, completing a three-game sweep at Stephen Schott Stadium.
This win puts Santa Clara back into the West Coast Conference race and marks its first sweep of LMU since 2018. The Broncos overcame two deficits during the game, scoring seven runs across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the victory.
Santa Clara (12-14, 3-3 WCC) had strong performances from several players. Thomas Ferroggiaro, Johnny Luetzow, and Tate Medicoff each recorded three hits. Medicoff contributed significantly by driving in three runs and scoring once. He delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning to reduce LMU’s lead to one run before scoring the go-ahead run later that inning. In the sixth inning, he added a two-out single that brought in two more runs.
Freshman pitcher Trevor Banning earned his first career win by providing scoreless relief during crucial moments in the fifth and sixth innings. RJ Meyn closed out the game with over three shutout innings for his third save of the season. Jace Gillmore started for Santa Clara, striking out four batters over three innings while allowing one earned run.
Notable achievements include Santa Clara erasing its sixteenth deficit of the season and extending Ben Cleary’s reached-base streak to 25 games spanning this year and last season’s final game. The Broncos’ total of 31 runs scored over this weekend is their highest against LMU since May 2010.
Santa Clara will finish its five-game home stand with a matchup against San Jose State on Monday evening.
