Rep. Ro Khanna, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 17th district, recently highlighted job losses in several American cities through a series of tweets. These posts draw attention to the economic impact of business closures on local communities.
On June 6, 2025, Rep. Khanna reported that “In Bingen, Washington, 81 employees lost their jobs when the lumber mill SDS Lumber closed.” This closure marks a significant economic shift for the small community dependent on the mill for employment.
In another tweet from the same day, he noted that “In Richmond, Virginia, aluminum manufacturer Novelis closed to consolidate their US operation, costing 72 employees their jobs.” The consolidation strategy by Novelis has resulted in job losses affecting many families in Richmond.
Additionally, Rep. Khanna mentioned the closure of a facility in California: “Seventy-three jobs were lost when biomedical manufacturer ImmPACT Bio closed its Canoga Park, California, facility.” This development adds to the challenges faced by workers in Canoga Park as they seek new employment opportunities.
Ro Khanna has been serving in Congress since 2017 after replacing Mike Honda and represents a district known for its technological innovation. Born in Philadelphia and educated at the University of Chicago and Yale University, Khanna resides in Fremont and continues to advocate for economic issues impacting his constituents and beyond.
