Representative Ro Khanna, currently serving California’s 17th district in the U.S. Congress, recently addressed the issue of deindustrialization through a series of tweets. Khanna highlighted job losses and factory closures affecting the American workforce and economy.
On May 2, 2025, Khanna tweeted that “For the past 50 years, deindustrialization policy has slowly hollowed out American factory towns as producers move overseas and close down. This week 816 Americans lost their jobs due to deindustrialization as five factories closed and five administered mass layoffs.” This tweet underscores Khanna’s ongoing concern about the long-term impacts of deindustrialization on American communities.
In another tweet on the same day, Khanna noted specific job losses caused by factory closures, mentioning that a “Pharmaceutical manufacturer Bristol Myers Squibb cut 57 jobs when it closed its Redwood City, California, location.”
He also highlighted another closure, stating, “In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, steel door manufacturer Household Metals, Inc. closed, costing 71 employees their jobs.“
Ro Khanna, who has been representing California’s 17th district since 2017, is an advocate for economic reforms. He was born in 1976 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and currently resides in Fremont, California. Khanna attended the University of Chicago, where he earned his BA in 1998, and later received his JD from Yale University in 2001.
