Ro Khanna, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 17th district since 2017, has shared insights on various socio-economic issues via social media. Khanna, who succeeded Mike Honda and resides in Fremont, California, emphasized the importance of high-paying public service careers and affordable housing in his recent tweets.
On May 12, 2025, Khanna highlighted the economic condition of his district by stating that “In part thanks to higher-paying public service careers, only 6% of my district lives below the poverty line, with a much lower share of rent-burdened households than 419 out of 437 districts in America.” This tweet underscores the positive impact of well-compensated public sector jobs on reducing poverty levels.
In another post from the same day, Khanna addressed employment opportunities for non-college graduates. He wrote that “One of the top priorities for Congress must be generating high-paying jobs that do not require a college education, and subsidizing vocational and apprenticeship programs that open career paths.” This statement reflects his advocacy for creating diverse job opportunities accessible to all educational backgrounds.
Additionally, Khanna pointed out housing affordability challenges within his district. On May 12, he tweeted that “Thirty-five percent of residents are rent-burdened, and 82% of people working in the district commute to work due to high housing costs.” He further stressed the need for improved housing policies by stating “That’s too much. We need to do more to make housing affordable across the country, and that starts with better housing policy at all levels.”
