Rep. Ro Khanna, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 17th district since 2017, has recently voiced concerns about various economic and policy issues via social media. Born in Philadelphia in 1976 and currently residing in Fremont, Khanna holds a BA from the University of Chicago and a JD from Yale University.
On May 14, 2025, Rep. Khanna expressed apprehension regarding the Republican budget plan through a tweet. He stated, “The Republican budget will devastate charitable organizations with a 10% tax, the ability to revoke non-profit status, and universities with a 21% tax.” He warned that these measures could hinder research initiatives and dismantle organizations aiding vulnerable populations.
In another post on May 15, 2025, Khanna highlighted significant cuts to Medicaid within the same budget proposal. During an appearance on Chris Cuomo’s show, he remarked that this budget features “the largest cuts in Medicaid in the program’s history,” potentially resulting in rural hospital closures and loss of essential healthcare services for millions.
Later that day on May 15, Khanna commented on Walmart’s announcement of price hikes due to tariffs imposed by former President Trump. In his tweet, he questioned if any other president had enacted policies leading to such price increases without external factors like an oil embargo or pandemic playing a role.
