Ro Khanna, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 17th district since 2017, has been vocal on social media regarding several pressing issues. With a background in law from Yale University and an undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago, Khanna addresses topics ranging from layoffs in the defense sector to housing affordability and child welfare.
On May 16, 2025, Khanna reported that “Defense manufacturer Collins Aerospace conducted mass layoffs in Chula Vista, California, laying off 127 employees.” This announcement highlights ongoing challenges within the defense manufacturing industry and its impact on employment in California.
The following day, May 17, 2025, Khanna expressed concerns about the housing market. He stated that “The number of first time homebuyers on the market is at an all time low.” He attributed this trend to corporate landlords driving up home prices and called for legislative action with his Stop Wall Street Landlords Act to address these issues.
On May 18, 2025, Khanna turned his attention to child welfare programs amidst budget cuts. He noted that “- 19% of children rely on SNAP – 42% of children rely on Medicaid – 38% of children rely on free or reduced price school meals”. He criticized Republican budget cuts as detrimental to children’s healthcare and nutrition needs.
Ro Khanna was born in Philadelphia in 1976 and currently resides in Fremont. His tenure in Congress follows replacing Mike Honda in 2017.
