Rep. Ro Khanna, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 17th district since 2017, has been vocal about recent job losses in various manufacturing sectors across the United States. Through a series of tweets, Khanna highlighted significant layoffs and plant closures affecting workers in different states.
On July 4, 2025, Rep. Khanna tweeted about the closure of Novelis Corporation’s plant in Fairmont, West Virginia, which resulted in the loss of 187 jobs. He emphasized the need for legislative action by stating that “Congress must prioritize legislation like my Steel Modernization Act that will direct federal investments into steel and aluminum manufacturing and protect good-paying” jobs.
In another tweet on the same day, Khanna reported that LACROIX Electronics had shut down its Grand Rapids, Michigan plant, leading to 115 job losses. He succinctly noted “LACROIX Electronics, an electronics manufacturer, shut down its Grand Rapids, Michigan, plant, letting go of 115 workers.”
Additionally, Khanna mentioned Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation’s decision to cut 34 jobs following the closure of its San Diego, California operations. The tweet stated “Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation cut 34 jobs after shutting down operations at its San Diego, California plant.”
Khanna was born in Philadelphia in 1976 and currently resides in Fremont. He holds a BA from the University of Chicago and a JD from Yale University.
