Rep. Ro Khanna, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 17th district since 2017, has recently highlighted concerns about the ongoing impacts of deindustrialization in America through a series of tweets. These posts focus on recent job losses due to factory closures and layoffs, underscoring the economic challenges facing many communities.
On July 4, 2025, Khanna noted that “The decades-long effects of deindustrialization policy are still being seen in communities across the country.” He shared that 2,343 Americans lost their jobs following the closure of 14 factories and significant layoffs at four others.
In another tweet posted on the same day, he mentioned specific job losses in Portland, Oregon: “Eleven transit manufacturing jobs were lost in Portland, Oregon, with the layoffs at Navajo Manufacturing Co., Inc.”
Additionally, Khanna addressed job losses in Tennessee’s automotive sector. He reported that “Tennessee automotive manufacturer Adient laid off 415 union workers at two facilities in Lexington and Columbia after losing its contract with General Motors.”
Khanna’s educational background includes a BA from the University of Chicago and a JD from Yale University. Born in Philadelphia in 1976, he currently resides in Fremont.
