Rep. Ro Khanna, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 17th District since 2017, has used his social media platform to voice concerns over various socio-economic issues. On May 2, 2025, he highlighted the closure of a major manufacturing plant and raised awareness about the implications of Medicaid funding cuts and rising childcare costs in subsequent tweets.
On May 2, 2025, Khanna announced that “Pulse and reverse power supplies manufacturer ProTec Dynatronix closed its Amery, Wisconsin, plant and cut 53 jobs.” The closure of the plant signifies a setback for the local workforce in Amery, Wisconsin.
The following day, May 3, 2025, Khanna shared data regarding nursing home patient reliance on Medicaid, emphasizing that “in 2022, over half of nursing home patients relied on Medicaid. Cutting $880B in funding will significantly increase residents’ costs and devastate the lives of our most vulnerable seniors.” He advocates for continued healthcare funding to prevent negative impacts on millions of Americans.
Later on May 3, 2025, Khanna addressed the high costs of childcare in comparison to other common expenses, stating that “in some states, the annual cost for childcare is 83% higher than in-state college tuition AND 21% higher than the average rent.” He stressed the urgent need to reform the childcare system, promoting a bill to reduce costs for parents while ensuring fair wages for employees.
Khanna, who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1976 and now resides in Fremont, graduated from the University of Chicago in 1998 and earned his Juris Doctor from Yale University in 2001.
