Rep. Ro Khanna, currently serving as the U.S. representative for California’s 17th district, has been active in political discourse on various issues, including student loans, healthcare affordability, and the remembrance of historical events. On April 23 and 24, 2025, Khanna shared his views on these topics through a series of tweets.
On April 23, 2025, Khanna shared his personal experience with student debt, describing how he managed to pay back over $100,000 after years of $700 plus monthly payments and a forbearance in his 20s. He cited this experience as a basis for concern over the impending resumption of payments for many. “5.3M are already in default. Suddenly restarting payments after years will destroy credit scores. We need to make public college and vocational programs free.”
The following day, on April 24, 2025, Khanna emphasized the importance of healthcare affordability for Americans. He highlighted the fact that over half of Americans regard it as a top priority and called for legislative action: “It’s time for us to listen and pass Medicare for All, so quality healthcare is in reach for every American.”
On the same day, Khanna commemorated the victims of the Armenian Genocide. He posted a tweet in remembrance of the tragedy, urging continued advocacy for human rights worldwide. He stated, “Today, it is important we remember the violence and cruelty faced by the Armenian people in the Metz Yeghern — the Armenian Genocide. We must work to serve the memory of those who died and continue to fight to protect human rights across the world.”
Ro Khanna has represented California’s 17th district in Congress since 2017, following his predecessor Mike Honda. Khanna was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1976 and currently resides in Fremont. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1998 and received his JD from Yale University in 2001.
