Santa Clara men’s golf sophomore Matt Robles finished the opening day of the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational in sole possession of third place at 8-under par, according to a March 23 update from the team. The tournament is being held at Silverado Country Club in Napa, California.
Robles posted rounds of 69 and 67, recording four birdies and one bogey in his first round, followed by seven birdies and two bogeys in his second. He enters Tuesday’s final round just four strokes behind the leader. The Broncos as a team are currently fifth with a combined score of 12-under par (278-286–564) among a field of fourteen teams.
Other notable performances for Santa Clara include Calder Overfelt and Tucker Sweeney, both tied for eighteenth at 2-under par (142). Overfelt made nine birdies across two rounds while Sweeney tallied seven. Emil Nielsen, competing as an individual, shot an opening-round 70 but sits tied for forty-second at one-over par overall. J.P. Odland and Kevin Hollomon are tied for fifty-second at three-over par.
The team standings show BYU leading with a score of twenty-eight under par (548), paced by top-50 player Kihei Akina who holds an individual lead at twelve under par (132). North Alabama is second at seventeen under, with Tohoku Fukushi and San Francisco tied for third.
The final round will be played tomorrow.
