Freshman Lara Somfai has been named ACC Rookie of the Week for games played between January 2 and 8, according to an announcement from the conference on Monday. The ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are determined by votes from the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
During Stanford’s recent road trip to play against Pitt and Georgia Tech, Somfai averaged 17.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game.
In Thursday’s game at Pitt, Somfai recorded 15 points, 23 rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and three blocks. She became only the second player in NCAA history to achieve those numbers in a single game since records have been kept starting with the 2002-03 season, and she is the first freshman to do so. The other player with this stat line was Ruvanna Campbell of Illinois-Chicago against Northern Illinois on November 17, 2014.
Somfai’s performance included setting an ACC freshman record with her 23 rebounds. This is also the highest rebound total by a major conference freshman nationally this season and marks the most by any ACC player since Sarah Imovbioh (Virginia) had 24 rebounds against Ohio State on November 14, 2014. Her total ties for third in Stanford program history behind Cameron Brink’s and Chiney Ogwumike’s previous performances.
This marked Somfai’s sixth double-double of the season—the most for a Stanford freshman since Ogwumike set a school record with eleven during the 2010-11 season.
On Sunday at Georgia Tech, Somfai followed up with a career-high of 19 points along with nine rebounds, six assists, and one block. She is currently the only freshman to post these numbers in a game this season and is the first ACC freshman to do so since Hannah Hidalgo in December 2023.
Somfai has now won four Rookie of the Week awards this year—a new program record. Previously, Haley Jones earned three Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors in the 2019-20 season while Kaylee Johnson was recognized three times during the 2014-15 campaign. The Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award began in the 2012-13 season.
Stanford will next play at home against Virginia Tech on Thursday, February 12 at 7 p.m.
