Rep. Ro Khanna, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 17th district, has shared a series of tweets highlighting recent factory closures and job losses across the United States. His posts reflect concerns over the economic impact on communities and call for federal action to support industries.
On May 23, 2025, Rep. Khanna noted that “The largest closure was in Yankton, South Dakota, where 277 employees lost their jobs when meat processor Cimpl’s LLC permanently closed.” This significant closure is part of a broader trend affecting American workers.
In another tweet from the same day, Rep. Khanna stated that “Factories are closing across America, leaving communities hollowed out and many people without jobs. This week 670 people lost their jobs when 6 factories closed and 2 administered mass layoffs.” This highlights a concerning pattern of industrial decline impacting employment nationwide.
Additionally, he mentioned specific layoffs in the tech sector: “Semiconductor manufacturer SK hynix America in San Jose, California laid off 33 jobs.” Rep. Khanna emphasized the need for congressional action by stating, “It’s time for Congress to allocate more federal investments, like the CHIPS and Science Act I co-authored, and guide the U.S. to semiconductor manufacturing leadership.”
Ro Khanna has served in Congress since replacing Mike Honda in 2017. Born in Philadelphia in 1976 and now residing in Fremont, Khanna holds degrees from the University of Chicago and Yale University.
