Rep. Ro Khanna, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 17th district since 2017, has recently shared concerns on social media regarding significant job losses and the closure of civil rights offices within the Department of Education. These issues have been highlighted in his recent tweets, addressing both educational and industrial challenges facing the country.
On June 6, 2025, Rep. Khanna stated that “Half of the Department of Education’s civil rights offices have closed and more than 240 union workers have been laid off.” He described this development as “an attack on America’s kids,” urging Congress to take responsibility for safeguarding public education in the United States.
In another tweet posted later that day, Khanna expressed concern over manufacturing jobs moving overseas: “For decades, America has allowed manufacturing to go offshore, hollowing out communities across the country.” He reported that during that week alone, “2,070 workers lost their jobs when 13 factories closed and 6 administered mass layoffs.”
Furthermore, Khanna noted a specific instance of job loss at a pharmaceutical company: “One hundred and forty-nine workers were laid off from pharmaceutical manufacturer Gilead Sciences in Foster City, California.”
Rep. Ro Khanna was born in Philadelphia in 1976 and currently resides in Fremont. He holds a BA from the University of Chicago and a JD from Yale University.
