In a series of tweets, Representative Ro Khanna addressed several pressing economic issues. Khanna, who has served in the U.S. Congress since 2017 and represents California’s 17th district, expressed his concerns regarding job cuts, consumer protection, and credit card debt affecting Americans.

On April 18, 2025, Rep. Khanna reported that “Recycled ingredients manufacturer Darling Ingredients, Inc., cut 51 jobs in Wadesboro, North Carolina.”

The following day, April 19, 2025, Khanna highlighted the mounting challenges of increasing living costs, as he noted that “As the cost of living rises, Trump is threatening to dismantle the Consumer Protection Bureau — the agency that has saved consumers $21B since 2011. We should be helping lower costs for Americans, not eliminating protections against big banks and corporations.”

Later the same day, Khanna drew attention to the issue of credit card debt, pointing out that “Nearly half of Americans are carrying credit card debt; 28% of those have debt to cover everyday expenses like childcare, grocery, and utilities. The average credit card interest rate is still 28.7%. Congress has to cap interest rates at 10% and stop Big Banks from exploiting.”

Ro Khanna, 46, was born in Philadelphia and currently resides in Fremont, California. An alumnus of the University of Chicago and Yale University, he joined Congress after replacing Mike Honda in 2017.
