Brenda Villa, considered one of the most accomplished athletes in women’s water polo, will return to Stanford University as Associate Head Coach for the Cardinal women’s water polo program in 2026. The announcement was made by John Tanner, Stanford’s Dunlevie Family Director of Women’s Water Polo.

“Brenda is an icon in the water polo world, as one of our sport’s greatest ever athletes, as a global ambassador for the sport, and as an extraordinary coach who engenders belief, self-reliance and resilience in her athletes and teams,” said Tanner. “Brenda’s path to Stanford was exceptional, a journey made possible by the City of Commerce, her family, teachers, coaches and her own relentless drive. Brenda’s journey since graduating has been equally remarkable.”

Villa began her collegiate career at Stanford nearly 25 years ago and quickly built a legacy that included leading the Cardinal to its first NCAA title in 2002 after redshirting in 1999 to train for the Sydney Olympics. She earned three All-American honors and was named ACWPC Player of the Year in 2001 before becoming Stanford’s first Peter J. Cutino Award recipient in 2002. In addition to being named Pac-12 Player of the Century in 2016 and joining the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame, Villa remains among Stanford’s top scorers with 173 career goals.

On the international stage, Villa is one of only two four-time Olympic medalists (2000-2012) in women’s water polo history. She accumulated 20 medals across major competitions representing Team USA and was named Female Water Polo Player of the Decade (2000-09) by FINA Aquatics World Magazine.

“Returning to Stanford is incredibly special to me,” said Villa. “Being part of the first NCAA championship team here wasn’t just about winning — it was about laying the foundation for what this program could become. As one of the early athletes to help shape that era, I feel honored to now give back as a coach and help lead the next generation of student-athletes who will carry that legacy forward.”

Most recently, Villa served as head coach at Orange Lutheran High School since 2022 where she earned recognition as CIF Open Division Coach of the Year twice (2023-24) and led her team to consecutive regional state titles including an undefeated season in 2024.

Her coaching background also includes five years as assistant coach at Cerritos College—helping secure a CCCAA state title—and ten seasons leading Castilleja School’s program beginning in 2010. Additionally, she coached Team USA’s U16 squad.

Beyond coaching duties, Villa has focused on advocacy efforts aimed at increasing diversity within aquatic sports through initiatives such as Project 2020—a nonprofit she co-founded—to provide access for under-resourced communities near Northern California’s East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park areas. The Brenda Villa Foundation furthers these aims by offering micro-grants supporting aquatic programs.

Villa serves on several boards including USA Water Polo Board of Directors and committees related to women’s sports advocacy.

Born in East Los Angeles and raised competing on boys’ teams due to lack of girls’ options at Bell Gardens High School, Villa graduated from Stanford with a political science degree in 2003. She resides with her husband and two children.
