In a recent exhibition at the Anderson Collection at Stanford University, a connection between Earth and the cosmos is beautifully depicted through the immersive experience of Stellar Axis. The exhibition, featuring the work of environmental artist Lita Albuquerque, showcases a unique representation of the star Rigil Kentaurus amidst a polar desert setting.
The installation at the Anderson Collection includes an ultramarine-blue sphere symbolizing Rigil Kentaurus, accompanied by a film and documentary photography, creating a mesmerizing display for visitors. This representation is a part of Albuquerque's larger project, Stellar Axis: Antarctica, which was created during an expedition to Antarctica in 2006.
Jason Linetzky, director of the Anderson Collection, highlighted the importance of art in connecting humanity, stating, “We’re at a moment in history where it’s essential to find universal points of human connection, and art and artists are a vehicle for doing that.”
Albuquerque's work not only delves into the cosmic connections but also reflects on the fragility and interdependence of human life. As Albuquerque expressed, "When I close my eyes I see entire planets covered in ultramarine blue pigment... in Stellar Axis, the planet cradled by both poles."
